One really important (and often overlooked) topic that Spanish students need to cover is transport. 🚗🏍️

This encompasses vehicle types, car part names (necessary for repairs or buying/selling) and crucially, movement verbs (take, drive, ride, sail, etc.).

In this lesson, I'll teach you all these nouns and verbs, along with some sample dialogues.

Common vehicle names in Spanish

Here I've provided a table of almost every vehicle type in Spanish with their English translations.

In the second column, you'll find the plural forms.

Essential Spanish verbs for transportation

  • Conducir (to drive): automóvil, motocicleta, camión, autobús, furgoneta, coche deportivo
  • Montar (to ride/mount): bicicleta, motocicleta, caballo
  • Navegar (to sail/navigate): barco, bote
  • Volar (to fly): avión, helicóptero, planeador
  • Viajar (to travel): tren, autobús, caravana
  • Remar (to row): bote, canoa, kayak
  • Patinar (to skate): patineta
  • Pilotar (to pilot): avión, helicóptero
  • Conducir a vela (to sail): velero, catamarán
  • Conducir un barco a motor (to drive a motor boat): lancha, yate
  • Conducir un vehículo todo terreno (to drive an ATV): cuatrimoto, quad

I need to take the bus to go to school.

Navegamos en un barco durante nuestras vacaciones.

We sailed on a boat during our vacation.

Me encanta volar en avión porque es muy emocionante.

I love flying in a plane because it's very exciting.

Mi hermana viajó en tren a la ciudad para visitar a su amigo.

My sister traveled by train to the city to visit her friend.

Remamos en el lago durante la tarde.

We rowed on the lake during the afternoon.
